‘Carry the Torch Proudly!’

A Message from Steve Goff on His Retirement      (back)

To the Members of the Great UFCW 8-Golden State:

I’m writing to you from the coast of Washington state, where my wife, Janet, and I are building a house. Through my windows I see a spectacular coastline and soaring mountains. This is God’s country.

It will be a sweet retirement. So, why am I thinking so much of you and the other members of UFCW 8-Golden State? My recent retirement capped more than 40 years in service to the food industry and our Union. Since 1999 I served as Meat Division Coordinator and as a Vice President of UFCW 588 and UFCW 8.

Throughout those years I worked hard to achieve a better standard of living for my Union sisters and brothers. That’s a sacred cause, and while it is no longer my profession, it continues to be my passion. Fortunately, in President Jacques Loveall, Secretary-Treasurer Michael Tursky, the executive staff and the fine District Union Representatives of UFCW 8, you have great leaders in place to help you through the crucial struggles and triumphs that lie ahead. I have faith in this Union and its leadership. So should you. For all of his extraordinary intelligence, his innovation and his dedication to your welfare, Jacques needs your faith and your support as he works tirelessly to protect and enhance your wages, benefits and working conditions.

It takes a powerful institution like UFCW 8, with its various parts working in harmony, to fight successfully for your rights and your dreams. Our Union is a huge part of my life. I am proud to have worked with all facets of the membership, from poultry processors to meat packers to drug store workers to supermarket clerks. That pride will stay with me for the rest of my days.

I urge our members to share in the pride. Step forward and participate in the great work of your Union.  Carry the torch Proudly.

Yours in Solidarity,

S t e v e G o ff
